How Weight Loss with GLP-1 Inhibitors Work

Understanding Weight Loss with GLP-1 Inhibitors. What are they, how do they work and is it right for you?

By: Sarah Dudley, Family Nurse Practitioner

As a family nurse practitioner with many years of experience in primary care, I have observed the challenges and triumphs of numerous patients on their weight loss journeys. Recently, there’s been growing interest in a class of medications known as GLP-1 inhibitors, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, which have shown promise in helping patients manage their weight. In this post, I’ll explain how these medications work, their benefits, and the risks associated with their use.

What Are GLP-1 Inhibitors?

GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) inhibitors are a type of medication initially used to treat type 2 diabetes. These drugs work by mimicking the effects of the natural hormone GLP-1, which is involved in regulating blood sugar levels and appetite.

When you eat, your intestines release GLP-1 into the bloodstream, which helps lower blood sugar levels by enhancing the release of insulin from the pancreas. Additionally, GLP-1 slows down gastric emptying — the rate at which food leaves the stomach and enters the small intestine. This process helps you feel fuller longer, reduces appetite, and can lead to a lower caloric intake.

How Do GLP-1 Inhibitors Aid in Weight Loss?

The mechanism of GLP-1 inhibitors like Ozempic and Wegovy extends beyond just managing blood sugar. By mimicking the action of GLP-1, these medications can significantly reduce feelings of hunger and increase feelings of fullness. This can lead to a reduction in overall calorie consumption and, subsequently, weight loss.

Furthermore, research suggests that GLP-1 inhibitors may influence brain centers that control appetite and food intake, providing an additional level of appetite suppression. This dual action, both in the gut and brain, makes GLP-1 inhibitors an effective tool for weight management.

Benefits of GLP-1 Inhibitors for Weight Loss

  1. Effective Weight Reduction: Clinical trials have shown that GLP-1 inhibitors can lead to significant weight loss in many patients, particularly when combined with lifestyle modifications like diet and exercise.
  2. Improved Cardiometabolic Health: These medications not only help with weight loss but also have beneficial effects on various cardiovascular risk factors, including lowering blood pressure and improving cholesterol levels.
  3. Ease of Use: GLP-1 inhibitors are typically administered via injection once a week, which can be more convenient than medications that require daily dosing.

Risks and Considerations

While GLP-1 inhibitors offer significant benefits, they are not suitable for everyone and come with potential risks:

  1. Gastrointestinal Side Effects: Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. These are usually temporary but can be severe enough to lead to discontinuation of the medication.
  2. Risk of Pancreatitis: There is a slight increased risk of pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), which is a serious medical condition and requires immediate attention.
  3. Cost and Access: GLP-1 inhibitors can be expensive, and insurance coverage varies, which may make them inaccessible for some patients.
  4. Not a Standalone Solution: It’s important to note that these medications are most effective when used in conjunction with a comprehensive lifestyle intervention program. They are not intended to be a quick fix or a substitute for healthy eating and regular physical activity.

Who Should Consider GLP-1 Inhibitors?

GLP-1 inhibitors are typically prescribed for individuals who have not been able to achieve significant weight loss through diet and exercise alone and have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with weight-related health issues such as type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure.

Final Thoughts

If you are struggling with weight loss and interested in exploring GLP-1 inhibitors as a treatment option, it’s essential to have a thorough discussion with your healthcare provider. They can help determine whether this type of medication is appropriate for you based on your medical history, health status, and weight loss goals.

Remember, while GLP-1 inhibitors can be a valuable tool in managing weight, they should be part of a broader health management plan that includes nutrition, exercise, and other lifestyle factors. As your healthcare provider, I am here to support you in this journey and help you achieve a healthier, more sustainable lifestyle.
